What a week of weather we have had! From a quite balmy start to a far chillier end to the week.
The Year 3/4's Thursday afternoon visit to Sunnycroft fell victim to the weather and was cancelled. We will try and rearrange this part of the visit. The morning group did battle with the elements to use the grounds of our local National Trust property to practise their photography and sketching skills. Short Woodies will be working alongside the volunteers at Sunnycroft to support their efforts in raising funds to refurbish their glasshouse. The glasshouse is one of the only examples of its kind in the UK and volunteers are working to bring it back to life.
Year 5 pupils were evacuated to another local National Trust property this week - Attingham Park. They travelled back in time to experience how it would have felt to be a child evacuated to our area during World War 2. The children have displayed their knowledge and understanding, fully engaged in the activities and have really made the most of the experiences. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the cost, whilst we do subsidise the cost of trips, without the contributions we would be unable to run these visits.
Our Year 5/6 Football team have shown how their team approach pays off, they won the semi finals last week and have earned their place in the finals which will be at The Bucks Head early in May.
We have had a great deal of feedback about the traffic situation outside of the school and there have been near misses reported. We are working with the local police team and the highways department at the council to try and improve the situation. New signs have been put in place to direct people to the right entrances. We do ask that everyone works together to maintain the safety of our site - driving slowly and considerately is crucial. It is busy at dropping off and collection times, please allow plenty of time and be patient with each other. Parking should only be in designated bays Walking to school, especially as the weather improves, really eases the problem as clearly there are fewer vehicles.
We have also had assemblies about road safety, discussing the 'Green Cross Code'. Please reinforce these messages to your children, we have added links on the Parents menu on this site on the 'Useful Links' page. We have also included information about car seats on that page too, by law children must use the correct type of car seat until they reach 12 years old or are 135cm tall.
We have welcomed back some old Short Woodies on work experience form Charlton School this week, along with a couple of other students. They have worked alongside our staff to get a feel for what working in a school is like. We love to hear how our old pupils are doing and about their aspirations and dreams.
Next week is the last week before half term. Year 2 will be taking part in The Big SIng at Oakengates Theatre, an evening performance organised the The Schools Arts Trust. We are very excited to be part of this event, if your child is taking part and you would like to attend the show tickets are available form the box office at Oakengates Theatre. A big thank you to staff who have volunteered their evening to support the children at this event.
As always the Golden Leaf winners are pictured below, we are really proud of them and just as importantly they are proud of themselves. Have a great weekend
