SEND and Accessibility

"Pupils with SEND are effectively supported in lessons and their pastoral care is a clear focus for all staff at the school. Teachers know their pupils well and know when to intervene to help them catch up. Additional adults support effectively pupils in lessons. As a result, pupils with SEND make strong progress."

At Short Wood Primary School, we feel strongly that every child should reach or exceed their potential. We are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all of our pupils whatever their needs or abilities. Not all pupils with disabilities have special educational needs and not all pupils with SEN meet the definition of 'disability' but this offer covers all pupils.

We offer support for pupils with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities including; visual impairment, hearing impairment, speech language and communication difficulties, ASD, ADHD, ADD, Aspergers, cognition and learning difficulties, physical difficulties and social and emotional difficulties. We consider that the needs of the individual child are ‘key’ to their learning success. All children receive class teacher input via good and outstanding teaching where:

  • the teacher will have the highest possible expectations for your child and all pupils in the class;
  • all teaching is based on building on what your child already knows, can do and can understand;
  • putting in place different ways of teaching so that your child is fully involved in learning in class. This may involve things like using more practical learning or providing different resources adapted for your child;
  • putting in place specific strategies, which may be suggested by the SENCO (special needs coordinator) or staff from outside agencies, to enable your child to access the learning task.

Children’s progress is constantly monitored and assessed and careful records are kept. Sometimes we find that a child does not make the progress we expect. When this happens, we talk to parents and appropriate steps are put in place to support the child.

The school will always work in partnership with and keep parents/carers fully informed at every stage of a child's development. This could be for educational, personal and social or physical needs and the support may be short term or long term.
