Snow Day Fun Inspired by Percy the Park Keeper: One Snowy Night ❄️🦔

Here are some simple, cozy snow day learning ideas you can enjoy together as a family. They’re inspired by One Snowy Night and focus on kindness, winter animals, and spending time together, with very little preparation or resources needed. Some can be done outdoors if it’s snowy, and others are perfect for warming up inside.

First: Watch the story One Snowy Night via the above YouTube link. (Please always supervise children whilst watching YouTube)

🌨️ Outdoor ideas (garden or local park)

  • Animal Footprint Hunt
Look for footprints in the snow and guess which animals from the story might have made them. If you can’t find any, try making your own using boots or sticks.
  • Build a Winter Shelter
Using snow, sticks, leaves, or even a box, build a small shelter like Percy’s hut and talk about how animals keep warm in winter.
  • Caring for Nature Walk
Go for a gentle walk and look for places animals might hide or rest. Talk about how Percy looks after the park and how we can help wildlife too.
  • Snowy Story Walk
Retell parts of the story outside — knocking on an imaginary door, shivering like the animals, or pretending to squeeze into Percy’s hut.
  • Snow Pictures
Draw animals or scenes from the book in the snow using sticks, boots, or gloved hands.

🏠 Indoor cozy ideas

  • Build Percy’s Hut
Make a snug den using blankets, cushions, and chairs. See how many teddies or toys can fit inside, just like the animals in the story.
  • Animal Hot Chocolate Time
Enjoy a warm drink or snack together and imagine what each animal from the story would like to eat on a cold night.
  • Make an Animal Mask or Headband
Create simple animal masks or headbands using paper and crayons, then act out the story or make up a new snowy adventure.
  • Sound Storytime
Read the story again and add sound effects, tapping for snow, rustling paper for wind, or knocking for the animals at Percy’s door.
  • Kindness Jar
Talk about how Percy helps others and write or draw kind things you can do during winter. Pop them in a jar and try one each day.

These activities are all about having fun, staying warm, and sharing time together — there’s no pressure to do them all. Dip in and enjoy whatever works best for your family ☃️💙
