The Glider Launch Morning

Wednesday 13th February

Today, Year 5 launched their modified and improved gliders with great success. Leanne Mee, our STEM ambassador, came back to see how we had improved our gliders since her last visit. Parents were also invited to come and watch our exciting launch. Leanne recorded the distance travelled by each group's glider and we held our breath as she announced the winner.

The overall winner was Team Royal Air Force  from Class 13 with second place given to Team Aerial Assault Trooper from Class 11 and joint third given to Team Scientists and Team Engineering Pilots.

Aerodynamics Engineering STEM day

Year 5 had another exciting STEM day on Tuesday 29th January where Mrs Mee introduced the children to the topic - Aerodynamics. Their challenge was to design and make a glider to drop off provisions to stranded soldiers in WW2. Mrs Mee talked to the children about what would affect the flight of the glider, eg. forces acting upon it, aerodynamics and wingspan.

After an exciting morning, the children launched their gliders in a competition. The winning gliders were the 'Skyentists' and 'RAF Team'.

In class, the children will now investigate how wingspan and nose-shape of the glider will affect its flight.

Remberance Sunday - We had a lovely time on Friday at the Gratitude Café in Wellington and many adults commented on how amazing the children from Short Wood are. They spoke to Mrs Butele at the beginning of Sunday's remembrance march and said how overwhelmed they were with the 100 display made by the children.

We had an amazing morning learning about STEM. Lots of us now want to be scientists and engineers when we are older!

Life Vest Inside - Kindness Boomerang - "One Day"

Mrs Harris shared this video in assembly recently.

Watch as the camera tracks an act of kindness as its passed from one individual to the next and manages to boomerang back to the person who set it into motion.
