One of our stories this term is Hansel and Gretel and we are doing lots of lovely and exciting science investigations. Our first science investigation was to create the witches potion and see what would cause a reaction with the bicarbonate of soda. We had lots of different liquid ingredients and we predicted which ingredient will cause a reaction. Our different liquid ingredients were: soap, lemonade, vinegar, shaving foam and lemon juice. We then experimented with the different ingredients and found that the vinegar and lemon juice made the powder fizz and therefore caused a reaction. We then described and drew what we could see. "It's making a bubbling sound, "It's gone bigger because I put vinegar in there," "it's deflated."
Fruit tea bags:
As part of the Hansel and Gretel story, the witch lives in a sweet house. We discussed how sweets are bad for our teeth, we therefore made our very own tea bags using fresh fruit. The children were given the time to experience the fruit, by using their different senses of, smell, taste and touch. The children chopped and used a pestle and mortar to prepare the fruit. The fruits and herbs we used were, pink grapefruit, oranges, lemons, blueberries, mint and rosemary. "The pink grapefruit is very sweet and it smells nice," "the blueberries look like really small grapes," "I have smell mint before, I like it!"
